Minister for Institutional Reform and Regulatory Simplification

Maria Elisabetta Alberti, married name Casellati, mother of two children, lawyer and university lecturer, is an Italian politician.

On 22 October 2022, she was sworn in as Minister for Institutional Reform and Regulatory Simplification in the Meloni government. She was elected on 25 September 2022 in the single-member constituency of Basilicata for the Senate of the Republic in the ranks of Forza Italia.

On 24 March 2018, she was elected President of the Senate of the Republic for the 18th legislature, receiving 242 votes, making her the most voted president in Palazzo Madama since 1994 and the first woman in Italian history to hold the second highest office in the state. Previously, she served twice as Undersecretary of State for Health and Justice and was a member of the Superior Council of Magistrates. A long-standing member of Forza Italia, she was elected to the Senate of the Republic in the 12th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th legislatures.
