After graduating in physics from the University of Milan in 1968, he worked on chaos in classical and quantum mechanics. Among his main achievements are the discovery of the quantum localization of classical chaos and the thermal rectifier. He is the author of over 300 publications in international scientific journals and a book on ‘quantum computation and information’, published by World Scientific. In 1991, he received the Italian F. Somaini Prize for Physics, in 2008 the Fermi Prize from the Italian Physical Society, and in 2010 the International Prize for Physics from the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.
